Gianluca Plotino was born in Rome, Italy the 3rd of July 1978. He graduated in Dentistry (DDS) in 2002 at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome, Italy discussing a thesis on “Microleakage in Endodontics”. For this thesis, he was honoured with the “Alfred Bean Memorial” prize from the “Chicago Dental Society” (CDS) and the “Italian Association of Dentists” (AIO) for the best graduation thesis of the years 2001, 2002 and 2003 and he received this prize at the 139th Midwinter Meeting of the Chicago Dental Society, Chicago (US), the 20th of February 2004.
In February 2003, Gianluca Plotino attended the Endodontic Department of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome and became Tutor for the students of the School of Dentistry and of the School of Dental Hygiene for the teaching of Endodontology. From September 2003 to 2009, he has been Assistant Professor of Endodontics in the School of Dentistry, Department of Endodontics, under the Chairman Professor Francesco Somma, spending his time teaching, giving lectures and participating to the faculty practice. He followed the students in their graduation theses in Endodontics and he was part of the Graduation Commission of the School of Dentistry from 2005 to 2008.
From 2004 to 2007 he has been Professor of Endodontics in the School of Dental Hygiene of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome and the 19th of March 2009 he obtained his PhD at the same University by discussing a thesis on nickel-titanium endodontic rotary instruments: “Influence of cyclic fatigue on the fracture of nickel-titanium rotary instruments”.
Since 2008 he has joined the Department of Endodontics I at the University of Roma “La Sapienza” under the Chairmanship of Professor Gianluca Gambarini. Gianluca Plotino became Senior Lecturer teaching Endodontics, giving lectures and optional courses, participating to the faculty practice and following the students in their graduation theses in Endodontics.
From 2010 he is Professor of Scientific English in the School of Dental Hygiene of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and in 2012 Gianluca Plotino has presented to the Italian Minister of Instruction, University and Research all the titles needed to became Professor of I level in the Italian University system.
In 2004, 2005 and 2006 he has been a lecturer within the “Master of Endodontics” organised by Professor Livio Gallottini at the University Roma “La Sapienza”. In 2006 he gave a lecture within the “Master of Endodontics” at the International University of Catalunya, Barcelona (Spain) and in the Master of Endodontics at the International University of Barcelona (Spain) on “Root canal instrumentation using Ni-Ti rotary instruments”. In 2007 he gave a lecture within the “Master of Endodontics” at the University of Valencia (Spain) on “Root canal anatomy” and in the Post-Graduate course at the University of Melbourne (Australia) on “Root canal instrumentation using Ni-Ti rotary instruments”. In 2007 and 2008 he gave a lecture within the Post-Graduate course at the University of Sidney (Australia) on ”Root canal instrumentation using Ni-Ti rotary instruments”. In 2008 and 2009 he has been involved in the organization of two Post-Graduate courses on “Root canal preparation using Ni-Ti rotary instruments” and on “Obturation using warm gutta-percha techniques” at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome. In 2011 he has been teacher on reciprocation in Endodontics in the Post-Graduate Course of the Faculty of Dentistry at Chiang Mai University (Thailand). In 2011 dr. Gianluca Plotino has been part of the Scientific Board involved in the organisation of the 15th Biennal Congress of the European Society of Endodontology in Rome. In 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 he has been teacher in the Master of II Level in Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. In 2013 he was teacher in the Master of Endodontics of the University of Valencia on "Irrigation and endodontic instrumentation using reciprocating instruments", in the Post-Graduate Course on Endodontics at the University of Catalunya (UIC), Barcelona on "The root canal preparation using reciprocating files" and in the Post-Graduate Course on Endodontics at the CEU University, Madrid on "The root canal preparation using reciprocating files". He was also the Scientific Coordinator of the “International Master of Science in Endodontics” at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” for the academic year 2009-2010 and for the Master of II Level in Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry for the academic years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. From the academic year 2008-2009 he is performing Optional Didactic Activity for the undergraduate students of the Dental School and the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" teaching on rubber dam positioning, materials and techniques for the endodontic disinfection, dental bleaching and new trends in restoration of root filled teeth. In 2012, dr. Gianluca Plotino has been invited in the International VDW Opinion Leader Meeting in Munich to discuss on the present and future of Endodontics.
Dr. Gianluca Plotino has conducted high quality researches covering several topics in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry. These studies resulted in the publication of more than 85 full articles on some of the most important national and international peer-reviewed journals: International Endodontic Journal, Journal of Endodontics, Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology & Endodontology, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Journal of Dentistry, Dental Materials, Journal of the American Dental Association, American Journal of Dentistry, Odontology, European Journal of Inflammation, Journal of Biomedical Graphics and Computing, Medical Science Monitor, Practical Procedure & Aesthetic Dentistry, General Dentistry, Open Dentistry Journal, Endodontic Practice, Roots, Endodontic Therapy, Endo Tribune, Annali di Stomatologia, Annali Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Italian Journal of Endodontics, Italian Journal of Operative Dentistry, Dental Cadmos, Il Dentista Moderno, Endodoncia, Endodontie.
He has presented more than 35 short papers in occasion of international meetings and more than 45 short papers in occasion of national meetings. Dr. Plotino contributed also with 4 chapters in three different endodontic textbooks.
His main research fields are the “investigation of the mechanical properties of nickel-titanium rotary endodontic instruments” and “the use of micro-computed tomographic technology for the non-destructive study in endodontics”. He developed a new system for testing cyclic fatigue of NiTi endodontic instruments, a new device for testing cutting efficiency of NiTi endodontic instruments and a new software to quantitatively and qualitatively analyse specimens scanned using micro-computed tomography. Dr. Plotino maintains interest in almost all fields of Endodontology and Restorative Dentistry.
The researches conducted by dr. Plotino received several national and international prizes. In 2003 he received the research prize for the category Endodontics with a poster presented at the 10th Italian National Congress of Teachers in Dentistry. In 2004 he received the prize for the best research poster at the 1st Sybron Day in Rome. In 2004 dr. Gianluca Plotino won the 3rd Prize Pietro De Fazio of the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDOC) for the best research poster in endodontics. In 2007 he received the prize for the best research oral communication at the 11th National Congress of the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDOC) and in 2008 he was mentioned with merit for his research in the 6th Prize Pietro De Fazio of the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDOC). In 2010 he received the research prize for the category Endodontics with a poster presented at the 17th Italian National Congress of Teachers in Dentistry, he won the research Prize Dr. Riccardo Garberoglio of the Italian Society of Endodontics and obtained the “Research Grant 2010” from the European Society of Endodontology to support the study “Biochemical characterization of dental pulp stem cells and effect of methylacrylate monomers on cell differentiation” under the chairmanship of Prof. Gianluca Gambarini.
Dr. Gianluca Plotino travels worldwide giving lectures and courses focused on Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He teaches principally on the root canal preparation using NiTi rotary instruments, on root canal filling using hot gutta-percha techniques and on the restoration of endodontically treated teeth.
From 2006 he is Certified Member of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and active member of the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDOC). From 2009 he is International Member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE).
Dr. Gianluca Plotino is member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Endodontics, he is part of the Editorial Board of the journal Oral Biology and Dentistry, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Research, official peer-reviewer of the International Endodontic Journal and invited peer-reviewer for several international journals: Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, Quintessence International, DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology, Journal of Applied Oral Science, International Journal of Applied Oral Science, Odontology, Indian Journal of Dental Research, Iranian Endodontic Journal, Libyan Journal of Medicine, Scholarly Research, The Open Dentistry Journal, Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dentistry, Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, BioMed Research International.
He co-works with several Italian Universities and several international Professors, such as Professor Cornelis H Pameijer (University of Connecticut, US), Professor Alphons Plasschaert (University of Nijmengen, The Netherlands), Professor Leopoldo Forner Navarro (University of Valencia, Spain), Professor Gustavo De-Deus (at Universidade Federal Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Professor Maria Guiomar Azevedo Bahia and dr. Furthermore, from 2003 he co-operates with the Technology and Health Department of the Italian National Institute of Health (NIH) for testing and developing new materials, technologies and instruments in the endodontic and restorative area.
Dr. Gianluca Plotino is the owner and founder of the Dental Clinic Grande Plotino & Torsello in Rome, where he maintains his private practice limited to Endodontics and Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry and of the Life & Smile Education and Research Scientific Centre, where he conduct his research studies and a an educational program covering from the basic science on Endodontology and Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry to the most advanced techniques, technology and microscopic dentistry.
Dr. Gianluca Plotino obtained the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) in 2006 and he is a friendly user of both PC and Mac computers and their hardware and software. He speaks English fluently and attended several courses to improve the language.
In his private life, Gianluca Plotino loves to travel around the world and he is interested in modern art and photography. He likes to paint with particular reference to the contemporary art, having a huge production of Materic Art (www.gianlucaplotino.com).
